the number of votes of his second-place contender. we'll look at all the candidates in our first-in-the-west caucus. and it was only the second time nevadans held a state caucus... since switching from a primary format back in 2008. we spoke to caucus-goers in reno and carson city... who had mixed feelings about the process. and how washoe county schools are promoting social and emotional learning for children. ky sisson is live to tell us more about an improtant conference, and how it could impact schools across the country. these stories top your news right now at 4:30 a-m. today is wednesday, february 24, 20-16.

and i'm andi guevara. thanks for starting your day with channel 2 news this morning. let's start with a quick look at the forecast with meteorologist jeff martinez. sunny and mild today, with highs in the low to mid 60s and light winds. we really warm things up by thursday and friday, with highs near 70. it'll be a beautiful weekend, with low 60s for highs with partly sunny skies. have a great wednesday! thanks jeff. the results from the nevada republican caucuses are in... and it's another victory for the g-o-p presidential front-runner. donald trump won the first in the west republican presidential caucuses... his third victory this primary season. donald trump- "so tonight, folks, this was a great evening. i love this place, i love this state.' polls show trump did well among those who prefer a political outsider. he also won with republicans who listed immigration and the

as the most important issues. with all precints now reporting... trump secured a whopping 46 percent of the votes. finishing in second was florida senator marco rubio with 24 percent. senator ted cruz was in third.. with 21 percent. then it's doctor ben carson with 5 percent... and ohio governor john kasich with 4 percent. nevada has 30 delegates for the republican national convention, and they're distributed proportionally based on the results. now... nevada is still relatively new to caucusing.. since making the switch from primaries in 2008. we spoke to voters from different locations all around northern nevada yesterday to see how it went... at the caucus precinct in hug high school... the turn out was much higher than even the top republicans expected. but the sheer number of people made for some problems early on... jodie yocum: we've had like no instruction don't know where to

delegate or a committee person and there's no one to tell us what to do." john:"i'm sure these are last minute volunteers and could use more organization ...well... at first is was a big rough." not all the sites had problems not all the sites had problems like hug high... and many volunteers say despite the issues at the beginning there... the big turn out was a good thing. and at the nugget in carson city... caucus organizers were also surprised to see the amount of people who came out to take part in the caucus. but unlike some of the locations here in reno... they say the whole thing went pretty well. "i was expecting oh you have to sit around for a couple hours, not at all." "probably ten minutes, fifteen minutes in line, got a ballot and marked it and put it in the box." local g-o-p party leaders say they were happy with the large turn out in both cities. during the last caucus in 2012... only about 30 thousand people caucused in the entire

management is in the process of pushing through an update to our region's plans... in case of natural disasters. every five years... fema requires local jurisdictions to put together an updated plan for mitigating hazards. according to washoe county emergency manager aaron kenneston... the three biggest hazards threatening our region are... earthquakes, wildland fires... and floods. having an updated plan in place to handle those threats... makes our community eligible for federal funding when disaster happens. aaron: "if we did have a major flooding event, and we had damage, the first thing fema asks us is, 'did you go through this type of community planning process?" the plan has already been approved by fema... washoe county... and the city of sparks. now it goes to tribal leadership and the city of reno for approval. in 2012, the washoe county school district began integrating social and emotional

now they're holding a big conference in reno about it this week. ky sisson is live with more on the conference and why this curriculum is a big priority forthe school district. good morning ky. good morning john and andi! ten school districts, 150 representatives, and one idea... furthering the development of life skills in students. in partnership with the collaborative for academic, social and emotional learning, this conference is an opportunity for washoe county teachers and administrators to show other school districts how they have made this curriculm an integral part of learning. shaffer- "we've gone to austin, nashville and cleveland, and had the opportunuty to learn from them and now it is our turn to shine and show them what we've been doing in washoe county." social and emotional learning integration in classrooms has been proven to develop fundamental skills including self and social awareness, as well as decision making. washoe county has been recognized for the way they

every class and every staff member. and not only does the wcsd teach sel in some schools, but in all schools by this summer. shaffer- "we've trained over 100 schoools, over 4,000 teachers to reach over 64,000 students. that in itself is very notable even across looking at other districts that have been doing this same type of work." the school district is also touting their assesments of how students percieve social and emotional skills which has been adopted by the state of alaska, nevada, and austin, texas. tommorow on channel 2 news, we will have continuing coverage of how this curriculum is an insturmental part of the districts goal of 90 percent graduation rates by 2020. live in the studio, ky sisson,

welcome back. turning to crime beat... the carson city sheriffs office is looking for who broke into a store february 11th. it happened at the carson treasure thrift store at 49-49 highway 50 east in carson city. one or more burglars broke into the thrift store and stole an undisclosed amount of money. the suspect vehicle appears to be an oldsmobile alero 4 door

between the years of 19-99 and 2004. if you know anything, call deputy jarrod adams at 7-7-5 2-8- 3-78-54. and the group volunteers of america say an apparent copper theft has forced them to temporarily close the overflow homeless shelter in reno. pat cashell, regional director, volunteers of america northern nevada: "the building was flooding. upon further investigation they realized someone had come in and stripped all the copper from the building. cashell says that the overflow building does not have power or water... and has been forced to close. that affects close to 120 people. he says they are doing everything they can to find another building as quickly as possible. they are asking for the public's help as they search for a new or temporary building. you can contact them at 3-2-2-71-43. a larceny suspect is in custody... and now the nhp is looking for another after a

night. just after 5 p-m... troopers chased a silver nissan sedan at speeds of over 100 miles an hour before it crashed near meadowood mall... eventually stopping at the grand sierra resort. that's when two men fled the car. 23-year-old dominic gonzalez was later arrested and faces several charges, including possession of stolen property... reckless driving and driving without a license. the other suspect was last seen getting into a maroon passenger car with silver rims. he is a white man, who was wearing a black shirt or pullover and blue jeans. if you know anything that can help catch him.. call secret witness at 3-2-2-4900. still to come on channel 2 news

welcome back. developing this morning... three people are dead and several missing after strong storms and tornadoes ripped through the gulf states. in some places, homes and entire neighborhoods are barely recognizable now. don champion reports. looking around the world now... rescuers in nepal found the wreckage of a small plane that went missing shortly after take-off yesterday. all 23 aboard, including two foreigners, have been confirmed dead. the plane was on an 18-minute flight to a popular hiking destination... but lost contact a few minutes after take-off. the plane appeared to have flown directly into a mountain. residents in a nearby village reported hearing a loud explosion. the foreigners on board were from china and kuwait. all others were from nepal... including two children. a little closer to home... president obama announced his proposal to fulfill a campaign promise yesterday... to close the detention facility at guantanamo bay, cuba. "it's counterproductive to our fight against terrorists because they use it as propaganda in their efforts to recruit." there are 91 detainees still

cleared for transfers to other countries, 56 would be moved to the continental u-s... including accused 9-11 mastermind khalid sheikh mohammed. the white house says moving the prisoners to america will save as much as 85-million dollars per year.... but it will take a one-time cost of as much as 475-million to implement the plan. which means getting an approval from congress.somet hing that appears unlikely. the white house is urging congress to act before president obama leaves office. and demonstrations outside apple stores were staged at 30 locations across the u-s yesterday. protesters...opposing a federal judge's order for apple to help the f-b-i break into the i-phone of san bernardino shooter syed farook. apple says, it would be required to create new software that could put all customer security at risk. protesters are showing solidarity for apple's fight, saying the order would

million dollars in damages, in a lawsuit over its talcum powder. the suit, brought by the family of jackie fox, says she died of ovarian cancer caused by the talcum powder. they say johnson and johnson was aware of and neglected the dangers. the company is appealing the ruling - which represents the first award of damages by a u-s jury over similar claims. johnson and johnson says it stands by the safety of its
